64-bit Insanity Friday, Nov 30 2007

The world feels extra insane today. 64-bit insane, even. My mice that are supposed to be all knock-outs have suddenly acquired het or wt DNA. No one tried to run me over on my morning commute. I’m even finally feeling better almost a week after El Pato’s.

But the really insane thing is that I actually agree with Fake Steve on something. This actually causes me physical pain, since I think FSJ is rather annoying, not to mention a lunatic. (He was also funnier when it really could have been Steve Jobs.) But he’s right, this guy is a hack.

I mean really… Leopard the new Vista? Them’s fightin’ words, Tex.

Leopard has its own issues, but they’re unique to Leopard, just like Vista’s are unique to Vista.  I happen to think that Vista’s flaws were and are more grievous, but that’s beside the point.  I can’t and shan’t really comment on the Vista side, because 1) I don’t have extensive experience with Vista and 2) I don’t care about it.  The parallels this joker drew between the two are either anecdotal, or based on personal preferences.  So let’s begin. El Pato’s Revenge Wednesday, Nov 28 2007

On Sunday, I foolishly ate lunch at a place named El Pato’s and I’ve been regretting it ever since.  I seem to be getting slowly better, so things are looking up.  Out of the toilet.

I’m also rediscovering my high speed internet.  The Husband’s folks only get 26.6k dialup, and that’s under the best of circumstances of not doing anything.  The minute you try to go to a website, it freaks out and will either dumpy you offline or take 30 minutes to load whatever you wanted to see.

Things should pick up here shortly.  I can’t believe it’s already Wednesday.  Yeesh

CanoScan 500F Sunday, Nov 18 2007

Apparently I am the top Google search result for compatibility problems with Leopard and CanoScan LiDE 500F scanners.  I haven’t taken a look since I noticed the problem, but I hereby swear to those finding lil’ old me while googling for help, to take a more in depth look at what’s wrong.  Probably over Thanksgiving, I always need an excuse to haul the iMac with me to the Valley.

My dad says Canon will never update drivers and it’s as good as dead, so now I’m hell bent to prove him wrong.  If there’s a feasible way that doesn’t involve writing new drivers myself, I’ll find it.

Revenge Sunday, Nov 18 2007

The Honda has been named:  Revenge.

Yes, like the Dread Pirate Robert’s ship.  But also because it has a manual transmission.  The only thing The Husband wanted in his truck was that it was manual transmission, and that was the one thing his parents refused to consider.  “It would hurt the resale value” of a vehicle that will probably never be resold.

For a sedan, it’s pretty perfect.  It’s not as fun to drive as the Minis we test drove last year, but it’s a little more practical (only a little).  One knitpick – why on earth do they equip a car with LATCH, but only for the outside backseats when everyone recommends that you put a baby seat in the middle?  Nonsensical!

I decided to take us out to Kroger’s yesterday, and The Husband took the keys away as soon as I got into a parking space.  It wasn’t that I was that bad, it just caused him severe pain knowing it was still new.

New Car Saturday, Nov 17 2007

So The Husband and I are now the proud owners of a black 2008 Honda Civic LX.  For a sedan, it’s pretty sexy, even if I’m not particularly interested enough to be able to identify different sedans by their silhouettes.  I’ll leave that particular oddity up to The Husband, who is much better at it than I, having had the benefit of much practice.  Should I ever need to identify a car that ever so vaguely resembles a cockroach, I have his brain to pick at my leisure.

Oh, and it’s also manual transmission.

I was brave enough to take a toodle around the Honda parking lot after The Husband test drove it, and did not stall.  The clutch is much friendlier than his grandmother’s twenty year old Chevy Blazer which formed my first experience with a stick shift last Christmas.

I know it seems odd to buy a car I can’t drive, but I’ve never been able to back down from a challenge in my life.  And when Weshea “Fancypants” Simpson asked me how I would escape from a mass murderer if my only escape route was a stick shift and I couldn’t drive one, I told him I’d manage (which he didn’t believe.  Punk.) but decided that driving manual is something I should be able to do.  Just like converting Celsius to Fahrenheit in my head, and driving a pneumatic hand truck without banging into things, and isolating RNA.  Life skills.

Besides… this way when I finally get my Mini Cooper, I’ll be proficient at standard and can test drive it myself.  And I don’t have to worry about ruining my baby’s transmission with the learning.

The car is currently nameless, we’ll have to drive her a little before we decide on something.
